Schultze has lived his entire life in a small town near the river Saale in the German state of Saxon-Anhalt. His life is divided between his job and hanging out at the local pub, and he enjoys folk music, fishing and playing the accordion. That peaceful existence is suddenly changed when Schultze and his friends Manfred and Jürgen are laid off.

It's not easy to maintain the daily routine, as Schultze slowly settles into an almost entropic existence. Bored and full of ennui, our hero finds a life on the other side of the hill.

Though he has traditionally used his accordion to play the polkas of the region, Schultze discovers the zydeco music of the southern United States. His instrument is the perfect means to convey such upbeat melodies, but his change in musical taste threatens to disrupt the 50th anniversary celebration of the respectable local music club. Schultze must decide whether to go back to the stodgy old ways or to keep up with his new passion and be labeled a freak by the locals.
