Elmore Leonard is an incredibly discerning artist. Because he is extremely hard to please, any time that a movie adaptation of one of his novels receives his stamp of approval is cause for attention. The three most noteworthy are Jackie Brown and Get Shorty, which the author loves, and Out of Sight, which he generally likes quite a bit despite some changes that did not initially merit his endorsement.

One film adaptation that Leonard describes as “awful” is the 1969’s The Big Bounce, which starred Ryan O’Neal. Many people may complain about remakes, but if ever a film was crying out for a retread, The Big Bounce is it.

Director George Armitage (who helmed the fantastic Grosse Pointe Blank) shifts the action from a Michigan resort town to the lush tropics of Hawaii, and has assembled a cast that looks to be very solid. At the forefront is Owen Wilson, who plays a charismatic drifter and occasional thief named Jack Ryan. Ryan takes on a job as caretaker of an under-the-weather judge named Walter Crewes, a character that will be played by Morgan Freeman. In the process, Ryan gets involved with a gorgeous lady with unlawful plans.

This alluring lady is romantically involved with a real estate tycoon (Gary Sinise), a crooked guy with plans to build a new North Shore hotel and who also just happens to be a long-time rival of Judge Crewes. Ultimately, Jack will have to choose between the seductions of a beautiful woman and his allegiance to his employer.

At least on its surface, thanks to the talent involved, The Big Bounce has all the earmarks of being a potentially hilarious and entertaining caper flick. Time will tell whether it becomes another Elmore Leonard favorite or if it will go down as another botched attempt at adapting this particular novel. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
