You might only know Rupert Holmes as the guy who wrote Escape (aka The PiƱa Colada Song), but in the long days that have passed since that '70s tune became an iconic, breezy hit, he has developed into a talented writer of mysteries, both novels and theatrical productions. Now, his work will be translated into movie form as director Atom Egoyan brings his atmospheric style to adapt the provocative, acclaimed novel, Where the Truth Lies.

The story begins in the 1950s, a time when Vince Collins (Colin Firth) and Lanny Morris (Kevin Bacon) are one of the hottest showbiz duos in America. Lanny is an impetuous American, and Vince is a wickedly witty Brit. The combination makes them absolutely overwhelming and particularly irresistible to women. The duo is a big favorite of mob boss Sally San Marco (Maury Chaykin), who owns a group of nightclubs all up and down the east coast. Sally is consistently willing to do anything to keep "his boys" Lanny and Vince happy, and generally, this duty falls to Lanny's unreadable manservant, Reuben. One day, a gorgeous young woman is discovered dead in the bathtub of Lanny and Vince's suite, which sets off a series of events that leads their world to crumble. Although they are proven to have rock solid alibis and are completely free of guilt in the crime, the scandal is so severe that the pair must ultimately part ways.

Fast forward 15 years into the future, and their controversy/myth is still a thing of fascination for an insatiable public. A young journalist named Karen O'Connor (Alison Lohman) heads full steam into that controversy as she becomes determined to uncover the secrets of Vince and Lanny. She is able to convince a publisher to offer Vince a million bucks to work with her on the story of his life with Lanny, but there is one condition. He must tell the truth about the scandal that destroyed the pair and come clean about what happened on the night that the young woman died in their suite? (Kim Hollis/BOP)
