Position Staff In Brief
45/65 Kim Hollis Good performances, but it's a bit too quirky and dark for its own good.
92/159 David Mumpower Zooey Deschanel is wonderful, but the film ultimately achieves nothing and leaves a void of emptiness. Mayhap that's the intention, but I didn't enjoy the exercise.

Winter Passing is the feature film debut from writer/director Adam Rapp. The dramedy features Ed Harris as a reclusive novelist named Don Holden who has a strained relationship with his daughter, Reese (Zooey Deschanel). Reese has been promised $100,000 from a book editor if she can secure love letters from her legendary father to his revered late wife for publication.

Reese finds herself motivated by the prospect of cash and journeys from New York to Michigan. When she arrives, she learns that Don is living with complete disregard for his own health, and even more surprisingly, he has two young housemates. The first is a former grad student named Shelly (Amelia Warner), and the other is aspiring musician Corbit (Will Ferrell). Reese doesn't approve of this arrangement at all, but in time, she naturally comes to understand and appreciate her new "siblings." And her arrival also sparks change in everyone involved. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
