Best of Youth is a six hour (yes, you heard me right. Six hours.) Italian film that follows the lives of brothers in the years from 1966 to 2000. Nicola and Matteo Carati's adventures begin when they assist a young girl named Giorgia escape from an asylum.

Following this incident, Nicola's free-spirited nature leads him to travel the world and settle in for a life as a psychiatrist. He finds success and contentment with his chosen life path. Meanwhile, on the other road, the introverted and idealistic Matteo joins the Italian police with the notion that he will somehow be able to right society's many wrongs. Their opposing politics and disparate personalities become tied together as their world goes through violent and emphatic changes. The brothers find themselves both pushed toward each other and yanked apart as their individual dreams take them through the events that shaped the Italy of the past half century.

Best of Youth was the winner of a jury prize at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival and originally played as a television mini-series in its native country. It also swept a number of categories in Italy's David di Donatello Awards, the premier theatrical awards event for that nation. In addition to taking Best Film, Best of Youth also collected trophies for Best Director, Best Editing, Best Producer, Best Screenplay and Best Sound. It was nominated for five other awards in addition to the ones it won. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
