Director Michel Gondry will follow up his superlative effort in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with an adaptation of the 1984 sci-fi thriller Master of Space and Time, by Rudy Rucker. Jack Black is already attached to star in one of the two lead roles, and DreamWorks is negotiating to acquire distribution rights.
A story about two mad scientists who figure out how to control reality, Master of Space and Time is also about making wishes. The primary notion in the tale is that a person can actually change quantum uncertainty under controlled circumstances to obtain powers limited only by one's own particular imagination and prejudgments.
Gondry, who broke into the business by directing music videos, should be a unique creative force for an unusual story. The book is currently out of print, but does seem to have a rather loyal following amongst die-hard science fiction fans. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
