Set amidst the South African civil wars during the mid-1990s, The Last Face tells the story of two humanitarian doctors who meet and fall in love in this violent environment. More than a romantic drama, the film will deal with philosophical outlooks on human aid and relief work and will also show the primary characters as they are forced to deal with the difficult decisions they have to make.

Starring as the two unrequited lovers are Javier Bardem (Before Night Falls) and Robin Wright Penn. Also onboard for a supporting role as a journalist is Ms. Wright Penn's hubby and recent Academy Award winner Sean Penn.

The film is written by Erin Dignam and she will direct from her own script. She had been working for three years to find financing before finally coming to a deal with ATO Pictures, a company that is owned by Dave Matthews' ATO Records. While the South African musician has recently had featured roles in films such as Where the Red Fern Grows and Because of Winn-Dixie, his primary involvement in The Last Face is likely to be limited to the musical side.
