When last we saw Santiago Muñez, his dream of playing world-class soccer had been accomplished. Thanks to the help of Glen Foy, a scout who recognized the boy’s talent, Muñez was given the opportunity to compete for a spot on Newcastle United. While struggling at first, the soccer prodigy eventually makes the first team and even befriends superstar Gavin, the troubled talent who can’t give up his partying ways long enough to be a team leader. And since this is a movie about sports heroism, Muñez winds up scoring the winning goal for his team, reconciling with his estranged father just before the older man’s death, and learning any number of valuable life lessons about the world.

Everything was wrapped up with a nice, little bow on top, which was odd given the fact that it was established to be the first film in a trilogy.

So, the second film spits on the importance of Newcastle United as a soccer franchise. No longer is Muñez happy to play for such a second-rate bunch. Nuh uh. He must play for the legendary Real Madrid; he must line up alongside David Beckham and try to bend it in similar fashion. Now is the moment when I point out that the release of Goal II Living the Dream has been timed to coincide with Beckham’s American professional soccer debut. Disney hopes to capitalize on the unprecedented level of awareness the sport will possess at that moment. As many as possibly 300 Americans might care about soccer that day! You might think I’m being facetious but given the whopping $4.3 million that the last movie earned domestically, it’s hard to look at this project as anything other than a placeholder release on the fall schedule.
