Finally, there is a movie that Anthony Young will enjoy. Baseball historians (and New York Mets fans) will remember Young as the pitcher who couldn’t win a game. For 27 consecutive decisions spanning two seasons, Young was the losing pitcher. He just couldn’t buy a break despite pitching relatively well. A man with a career ERA of 3.98 should win from time to time, but Young was so unlucky that he never could get the W. For this reason, he can totally sympathize with Coach Lambeau Fields, the least successful coach in college football history.
Coach Fields’ last gig ended when he was given the ol’ heave-ho as oftentimes happens to perennially losing head coaches. To his surprise, opportunity knocks once more when one of the worst teams in the sport cannot find anybody else to take the job as their coach. Fields has a chance at redemption all he needs to do is lead this cast of misfits to a single win. Presumably, this will occur as a crowd of fans shouts “Let them play! Let them play!”
The Comebacks stars comedian David Koechner, a guy you might recognize as Champ “Whammy” Kind in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. He has also had memorable parts in Thank You for Smoking, Snakes on a Plane, and The Dukes of Hazzard re-make (he was Cooter). This will be his first attempt to carry a movie, so expectations are being kept modest for now. Then again, the same thing could have been said of Koechner’s buddy, Steve Carell, before The 40 Year-Old Virgin came out, and that worked out pretty well for all involved. Under any circumstance, if this football movie has nothing else going for it, there is always a positive in being able to say that Tom Brady directed it. No, it’s not that Tom Brady, but still.
