Too epic in scope, the story should have been tighter. Irrfan Khan is excellent. |
"The Namesake" is the story of struggling to find ones identity in the world. The slice-of-life film is based on a novel written by Pulitzer Prize-winning Jhumpa Lahiri.
Kal Penn (no relation to Sean) of Harold and Kumar fame, plays Gogol Ganguli the film's central character. Gogol, American-born son of imigrants, strives to find a his own place between his Indian heritage and the American culture he's thrived in. His struggle is mirrored in every facet of his life, even (as the title suggests) his namesake. The name "Gogol" is neither American nor Indian, and as such reflects the turmoil the protagonist feels. (Kyle Kunitake/BOP)
