The Dark Is Rising is based on the popular, Newbery Honor-winning novel by Susan Cooper and represents the first movie adaptation of her acclaimed series that includes the books Over Sea, Under Stone, The Dark Is Rising, Greenwitch, The Grey King and Silver on the Tree. The fantasy series tells of the struggles between the forces of Light and Dark and is based on the legends of King Arthur.

The movie adaptation of The Dark Is Rising is surely planned as the first in a series. It examines the life of a young man named Will Stanton. He learns that he is last in line in a group of warriors who have devoted their entire lives to fighting the forces aligned with Dark. He must travel back in forth in time on a search for Things of Power for The Light that will aid him in his battle. As he searches for clues on his quest, he is forced to battle indescribable evil. As the title of the film indicates, the Dark is in fact rising, which means that the future of the world lies in Will's hands.

The movie has a fine cast, including Ian McShane (Deadwood), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) and Frances Conroy. Since the film's success will rely on the person who plays Will Stanton, much is riding on the performance of Alexander Ludwig. He has previously worked primarily in TV and direct-to-video movie sequels, so he is a fairly untried presence. Here's hoping the film is good enough that 20th Century Fox will be looking to develop the entire series. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
