A morally-ambiguous detective (are there any other kind in movies?) searching for his missing wife encounters an aristocrat with a secret in this film from first-time writer/directors Wilhelm Liebenberg and Federico Sanchez.
The detective, Raymond Pope, becomes fascinated with the rich and beautiful Elizabeth Kane, and is slowly drawn into her world of privilege and debauchery. But when the bodies of young girls begin turning up, Pope starts to wonder if the mysterious object of his obsession is hiding more than just her past, especially when he learns that Kane’s companion believes her mistress to be the infamous Blood Countess, Elizabeth Bathory, a 16th-century murderess who believed she could attain eternal youth and beauty by bathing in the blood of virgins. Pope’s investigation not only puts him at odds with his infatuation for the beautiful woman, but places him and his loved ones in danger, as Elizabeth acts to protect herself and her secret, whatever it may be, at any cost.
Eternal premiered in Canada in September 2004 to mostly positive reviews, is based on an actual historical incident; Bathory killed more than 650 young women in Transylvania before being discovered and made to pay for her crimes. In fact, some sources credit Bathory, along with Vlad Dracule, for inspiring Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
