One of the most beloved and specifically American genres is the western. Few other countries can specifically relate to the frontier mentality since it's not a part of their culture and history. There is an exception, though. The Australian Outback is the international equivalent of that same frontier spirit, and films such as Quigley Down Under have shown this.

Director John Hillcoat, musician-cum-scribe Nick Cage, and accomplished thespian Guy Pearce are working together to make another such project. The Proposition is their answer to the spaghetti western, a kangaroo bushranger western. The film is one they promise is "funny, very violent, and very moving." The 19th century setting affords an opportunity to create a movie they would like to be Australia's answer to Unforgiven.(David Mumpower/BOP)
