Rene, a local beauty queen, has just lost her childhood farm to the bank. She decides to leave behind the pain associated with her hometown, Berkeley, a sweet, friendly fishing community in Queensland, Australia. Just as she begins her journey to the big city, an onslaught of meteors begin to rain down from the sky. Her hometown is bombarded and along with the torrent comes a strange infection.
It's not long before Rene realizes that leaving home won't be nearly so easy as she planned. The dead have been awakened and she is in the midst of a nightmarish assault by zombies that are starving for human flesh. She meets four other survivors at the isolated farmhouse owned by the town loony, Marion, and they all begin to work together to battle their way through the living dead and out of Berkeley. Soon, they learn that the infection is just the tip of the iceberg - there's a larger conspiracy taking place.
Undead is an Australian film from twin brothers Michael and Peter Spierig. It was released in its native country in 2003 and will now be receiving a small-scale distribution in North America. The film looks to combine elements of the classic zombie/slasher film with the western genre and should appeal to folks who loved such stuff as Peter Jackson's Braindead and Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series.
