Another of John Irving’s novels is brought to the silver screen. Well, at least part of it is. Writer/director Tod Williams has created the screenplay for this movie based on the first one-third of Irving’s book, A Widow for One Year. The studio has also brought some big names on board in starring roles, including Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger.

Bridges plays children’s book author Ted Cole and Basinger is his wife, Marion. The movie is set in the East Hamptons in the late 1950s. Sounds like a nice place for a family story, but the characters in Irving’s stories are usually anything but normal or involved in a situation that’s anything but normal. In this tale, the Coles have to deal with the sudden death of their two teenage sons in a car accident.

Ted is having some problems staying faithful to Marion and she is fighting her despondent feelings. These two situations are preventing them from moving on with their relationship and their lives. Hoping to get his wife to divorce him, Ted hires a personal assistant (Jon Foster) that looks just like one of their sons. But instead of sending her into a deep depression, Marion is soon having an affair with the teenager that is feeling a little incestuous.
