Catch That Kid tells the story of a young girl with a love of climbing whose father has forbidden her to indulge in her passion due to an injury he suffered while mountain-climbing. When the injury reasserts itself and an expensive operation is needed to save him, the girl plans a daring robbery of the bank where her mother works, and enlists the help of two best friends. The trio overcome high-tech security systems, guard dogs and a nasty chief of security in order to gain access to a bank vault suspended in mid-air, thus securing the funds for the operation and saving the girls father.
Catch That Kid is the English-language version of a Danish film, Klatretosen, which translates as Catch That Girl. The film sounds rather like Ocean’s 11 for the pre-teen set, with the added emotional impact of a young girl trying to help her ailing father. Having the bank she’s breaking into be the one where her mother works is an added twist, since in a sense the girl is creating problems for her mother in order to help her father. Be that as it may, Catch That Kid sounds like one of those rare children’s films that adults will also enjoy, much as the Spy Kids franchise appeals to the older as well as the younger generation. With the movie scheduled for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, the film has a chance at a pretty good opening weekend, especially if word-of-mouth creates a desire amongst the kinder to hurry out and see the film. And since kids’ films tend to have pretty good legs, unless Catch That Kid turns out to be a complete and utter dog of a film, one would expect it to see a nice, long stay in the theatres before sallying forth into the home video market, where it will likely enjoy an even longer life.
