Three young movie-lovers, one American and a set of French twins, are drawn together during the political upheaval of the 1968 Paris student riots and explore relationships in the context of their passion for film.

Bernardo Bertolucci has done a number of epic films with personalized stories set against sweeping historical backdrops that help distill the grander themes so that the audience can better understand the individual experience. His films also tend to garner not only critical praise, but nominations and awards, and though the limited release scheduled for October 3, 2003 is a touch on the early side, certainly the initial release pattern of New York/LA would qualify The Dreamers for Academy Award consideration, even if the film never expands beyond those cities. However, films of this nature are nearly always platformed, and one would expect that, with sufficient critical support and some good word-of-mouth, the film will expand into other cities as the end of the year approaches. Though it will probably enjoy moderate success on the art-house circuit, The Dreamers will likely receive most of its receipts from the home video market, particularly in the wake of the probable studio-anticipated year-end awards.
