Based on the true story of reporter Veronica Guerin, this film will trace the events leading to her brutal murder in 1996.

As a journalist in Dublin, Ireland during the early 1990s, Guerin endangered herself and her family by courageously reporting about the drug pushers in her country. So strong was Veronica's reputatuon that the ruling drug lords of Ireland viewed her as a much graver threat than the police force. Unlike the corrupt security force who were largely bribed into looking the other way, Guerin frequently called attention to high profile criminals in her exposés.

Under the white hot glare of The Sunday Independent, pushers were unable to avoid incarceration. This meant that Veronica Guerin made powerful, dangerous enemies. She became the subject of frequent death threats as her fame grew in her homeland. Eventually, an assassin followed through on the threats and ended her life. In the wake of the tragedy, government officials completely rewrote many laws and arrested several of the most wanted criminals in Ireland.

Veronica Guerin is a powerful story which sounds like a serious candidate for end of year awards consideration. Don't get carried away, though. It's also directed by Joel Schumacher. (David Mumpower/BOP)
