Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment seem to be everywhere these days. Fresh off his Academy Award®-winning Best Picture, A Beautiful Mind, Grazer's name appears as producer on four (or maybe five, if Eye See You receives theatrical release) films set for release in 2002. That's in addition to his work as executive producer of the television series 24. The projects are wildly varied, but it's a safe bet that projects with his name attached are highly likely to receive a firm marketing push. He's a force in Hollywood. Keeping this in mind, Blue Crush is a movie about surfer girls. Specifically, it stars Kate Bosworth (no, I don't know her either, but trust me when I tell you that she was in Remember the Titans) as Anne Marie, a beach bum chick who lives to surf. She lives in a seaside shack with three roommates, including her teenage sister. The girls spend all of their spare time (which is apparently ample) on their boards as they shoot to compete in the traditionally all-male Rip Masters surf competition. Anne Marie is content to simply pass her days riding the waves, but then she meets - and falls for - professional quarterback Matt Tollman, and he naturally becomes a distraction. The cast of Blue Crush is composed primarily of barely-known actors and actresses, though one of them has broken out over the past year. After receiving critical notice for her performance in the indie flick Girlfight, Michelle Rodriguez was cast in two more mainstream flicks, Fast and the Furious and Resident Evil. She'll actually be the biggest name in Blue Crush and her athleticism should play nicely for this particular role. Rounding out the cast are Mika Boorem, who was delightful in Hearts in Atlantis, Legally Blonde's Matthew Davis and Faizon Love of The Replacements. A number of the other featured performers, such as Sanoe Lake, are world-class surfers and will go a long way toward keeping the board sequences realistic and vital, not to mention the fact that it was filmed on location in Oahu. Director John Stockwell (crazy/beautiful) kept the cast and crew heavily local to give the film an authentic flavor. The script was written by debut screenwriter Lizzy Weiss, with Stockwell and Kario Salem (The Score) handling rewrites. Blue Crush is definitely a unique commodity and promises cutting-edge music and photography, including surf scenes that were actually shot from jet skis on the water. It was filmed on a modest budget and might appear on the surface to be a niche product, but should be aimed solidly at the youth demographic with a strong focus on hot chicks and extreme sports. Look for Universal to shoot for a Fast and the Furious-style breakout success. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
