In the Bedroom
Release Date:
November 23, 2001
Limited release
The first directorial effort from actor Todd Field, In the Bedroom premiered at the 2001 Sundance Festival to rave reviews and Oscar buzz for its stars, Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson.
Playing long-time marrieds, Spacek and Wilkinson are concerned when their son, played by Nick Stahl, becomes involved with an older woman, played by Marisa Tomei, who is the mother of two and is divorcing her abusive husband. The story details the emotional landscape traversed by the characters as they deal with the changes in their lives.
There's not a lot more available on the storyline; apparently, discussing the plotline further would reveal too much about what happens in the film. But the upshot is this is an intimate film that deals with people's emotions and reactions to life's changing situations. It will have a very limited release initially, but if the reviews outside of Sundance are equally as positive, and the word-of-mouth from a general audience matches what has begun with the inside crowd, In the Bedroom could become a modest art-house hit. The marketing campaign will need to focus on the quality of the film and the superlatives already sent its way; Miramax, the distributor, is eminently qualified to build excitement and buzz around the film, having done the same for so many intimate films over the years.
