When I was a young girl and a voracious reader, I grabbed every book I could get my hands on. Sometimes, as on occasions when we visited my grandmother, I had to explore the books on her shelves to try to uncover something entertaining and worthwhile. Prevalent amongst the books she had kept from my mother's childhood were mysteries from the Nancy Drew series. While I generally preferred Trixie Belden (she just seemed more realistic), Nancy was plenty entertaining, and likely the precursor to one Miss Veronica Mars.

One of the reasons that Nancy Drew is such a fun character is that she's almost like a mystery solving Barbie doll. Impeccably dressed and driving the coolest vehicles, she's also whip-smart and loyal to her friends. Nancy has been adapted as a character for film and television before, most notably with Pamela Sue Martin in the role in The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, but the time does seem ripe to update her for the 21st century.

Emma Roberts (yes, the niece of Julia and daughter of Eric) has the title role, and she's poised on the edge of being a pretty big star for her age. In this movie adaptation, Nancy will travel with her father Carson (Tate Donovan) as he goes on a business trip to Los Angeles. While there, our heroine comes across some evidence surrounding a cold case involving the death of a movie star. Her wits and sense of maturity are tested as she tries to solve the mystery in the midst of the self-indulgent world of Hollywood. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
