This year, instead of getting the annual Saturday Night Live fall film, we get a clone in the form of Corky Romano, with SNL staple Chris Kattan as the lead. Kattan plays Corky, a shy, sensitive guy who goes undercover within the FBI on behalf of his Mob family. Working on a premise that might be funny if it wasn't attached to this terribly unfunny SNL-type character, the movie continues the tradition of bringing quirky characters to the big screen.

The premise certainly would be inviting to any other actor. A role reversal where a mobster has to enter the FBI to spy on the FBI is a very funny premise, but it seems that it will be clouded with this over-the-top character and looks as flat as any SNL-based movie. The most recent of the SNL movies which featured a slightly-marginal character was The Ladies Man, and it opened miserably, with a weekend take just north of $5 million. There really is no reason why Corky Romano will deviate from The Ladies Man's box-office take. The movie lacks any of the marginal charm and wit of Superstar or Night at the Roxbury and seems destined to go out with a whimper. There is a possibility of success, however, if the marketing concentrates on the premise and not the main character. Early indication is that Corky is the star and it's Corky's movie to carry, so it'll be wait-and-see.
