Movie studios seem to have determined that approximately five years is the appropriate time to pass after a horrific tragedy has occurred before converting those events to movie form. 2006 brings us two film versions of some of the events that took place during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The first of these will be Flight 93, which will examine the heroic efforts of the passengers of that ill-fated flight to bring down their hijackers. That will be followed up later in the year with Oliver Stone's thriller about some Port Authority officers who must be rescued from the World Trade Center.
Paul Greengrass, who helmed The Bourne Supremacy and Bloody Sunday, a dramatization of the Irish civil rights protest march that resulted in massacre by the British troops in 1972, is at the helm of Flight 93. The story will be told in real-time, from the time the plane took off to the efforts of the passengers to foil the terrorist plot. While in the air, many of them had received calls on their cell phones and had become informed of what had happened earlier in the morning - two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center. As a result, this group became determined to keep their flight from doing something similar, and overpowered their captors. Their plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, with all aboard losing their life, but they are regarded as heroes of American history. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
