Based on the novel by Peter Mayle, A Good Year has Russell Crowe playing a failed London financier named Max Skinner who finds himself inheriting a vineyard. Max had spent his childhood holidays at his Uncle Henry's Provence vineyard, and he is very tempted to return to these happy roots. When he gets a loan to seal the deal, Max sets off for France.

Upon Max's arrival, he discovers that the estate, Le Griffon, is in a state of disrepair. The cellar is full of wine bottles that contain nothing but swill. However, the caretaker of the place, Claude, and the housekeeper, Madame Passepartout, feel as though they can get everything back into top shape. Soon, Max is happy and enjoying the attentions of two local ladies.

Things become complicated, however, when a young Californian named Christie Roberts arrives. She is the long-lost daughter of Uncle Henry and says that the property is rightfully hers. Will Max be able to maintain his idyllic life, or will he be forced to return to the drudgery of London banking? (Kim Hollis/BOP)
