Based on two stories by the late Andre Dubus (whose Killings was also adapted to film as In the Bedroom), We Don't Live Here Anymore premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriter Award. During its festival run, it was picked up for distribution by Warner Independent Pictures.
Hollywood Reporter compares the film to Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, as it is a tale of two New England couples whose lives become interconnected through a series of events that result in suspicion, anger, passion and even humor.
The film centers around two married couples. Both husbands are literature/writing instructors at the local small college, while the wives are both stay-at-home moms. With so much in common, it's only natural that the two families would be great friends and spend lots of time together in various activities, from eating out to exercising. And they share a lot about their own personal lives and discuss their various marital ups and downs. Over time, the passion in both relationships has cooled.
After a night of heavy drinking and smoking, things take a turn for the horny. Hank (Sports Night's Peter Krause), a confident, athletic man, makes a pass at the emotionally susceptible Terry (Laura Dern). While one might wonder if that would bother their respective spouses, the fact of the matter is that the somewhat impassive Jack (Mark Ruffalo) is also having an affair with Edith (Naomi Watts), an airy, delicate sort.
If this Dubus adaptation is as successful as In the Bedroom, We Don't Live Here Anymore should be a realistic film about people that could be one's next door neighbors. With four very solid lead actors, it may even attract some awards attention at the end of the year. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
