Anthony Anderson, the often-times hilarious comedian, is not exactly selective with his scripts. We need look no further than his five most recent outings -- My Baby's Daddy, Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London, Malibu's Most Wanted, Cradle 2 the Grave and Kangaroo Jack -- to verify this fact. That's why we are a bit nervous about the announcement that Anderson frontlines King's Ransom.
The movie will tell the story of a despicable, corrupt rich man played by Anderson. His wife, tired of being forced to reside in the same house with such a loathsome man, files for divorce. At this point, the soon to be single man realizes he doesn't have a prenuptial agreement in place. The missus could take him for half of his net worth!
As generally happens in movies, a crazy scheme is implemented by the Anderson character to protect his bottom line. The tycoon resolves to have himself kidnapped. Since he would be working with the plotter, the ransom to be paid would leave him ostensibly destitute. In reality, he would be keeping all of his money except for a small stipend paid to the kidnapper. This scheme sounds foolproof right until the truth is revealed. Several other people are already trying to kidnap the wealthy tyrant, so he must outwit and outlast the other schemers if Anderson's character hopes to survive.
Not to be alarmist here, but doesn't this sound a lot like What's the Worst That Could Happen, the disastrous Martin Lawrence/Danny DeVito 2001 release? Under any circumstance, the supporting cast is solid. The always amusing Jay Mohr and hilarious Scrubs surgeon Donald Faison play co-conspirators. (David Mumpower/BOP)
