Pierce Brosnan has been somewhat unique amongst Bond portrayers in being able to do other film roles in between his 007 pictures. Now whether this is due to talent, luck, savvy career maneuvering, more options available to actors in general these days, or some combination of all those things and more, it certainly has prevented Brosnan from becoming any more typecast as the British super-spy than he was to begin with. And the projects he seeks out are often unique and intriguing in their own right.

Take, for instance, After the Sunset. The story centers on master thief Max Burdette, who decides he needs one last score on which to retire. But unlike most heist films, After the Sunset is concerned not with the job itself, but with what happens once the crime has been committed. Burdette actually does retire after his final score, sailing off to a secluded tropical island with his girlfriend (Salma Hayek), there to live out the remainder of his life in peace and on the right side of the law. But Burdette’s arch-nemesis, an FBI agent played by Woody Harrelson, doesn’t believe Max is really hanging up his cat-burglar mantle, and follows Burdette to the island to keep tabs on him. To complicate matters further, a local crime boss (the always-fascinating Don Cheadle) wants to draw Max back into the life, and a complicated chess game ensues.

Now, I’ll admit that I’d watch Pierce Brosnan scratch himself for two hours on-screen and be perfectly content. Especially if he did it with as little clothing on as possible. But Brosnan is also a very talented actor, and while there are certainly elements of both Bond and Remington Steele, his two most famous roles, in the character of Max Burdette, there are also lots of opportunities for other layers. Plus, any movie that gives you Pierce Brosnan and Don Cheadle doing scenes together is already two-thirds of the way to the fireworks factory. Add in the tropical setting and some possibilities for double- and triple-crosses, and you have all the elements to make a fascinating and engaging film come 2004. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
