Bill Condon, writer and director of the critically acclaimed Gods and Monsters, brings us this look at the life of controversial zoologist and sex researcher Alfred C. Kinsey. Liam Neeson has been signed to play the title role with Laura Linney portraying Kinsey’s wife, Clara. Chris O’Donnell is also part of the cast as Wardell Pomeroy, one of Kinsey’s colleagues.

Even almost 50 years after the doctor’s death, he is still a very controversial figure. He is credited with starting the sexual revolution back in 1948 with the publication of his book Sexual Behavior and the Human Male, which was followed in 1953 by Sexual Behavior and the Human Female. Kinsey believed that every human’s sexual behavior is unique and he interviewed thousands of people to try and prove his point. When he died in 1956, he was still hard at work and was working on compiling sexual information about men in prison, Europeans, and animals other than humans.

The controversy that surrounds Kinsey is in regards to his information about sexuality in children. The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University Bloomington states that Dr. Kinsey’s information in this area came from his interview with a man named “Mr. Green” who molested children and kept detailed records from 1917 to 1948. Many critics, including radio’s Dr. Laura Schlessinger, longtime Kinsey critic Dr. Judith Reisman, and various religious groups, contend that Kinsey himself ordered pedophiles to molest children for his studies. The truth is still in question to this day.

Production on this film is taking place during summer 2003 in Toronto and locations in the United States. We should see quite a firestorm when this movie finally makes it to theaters. It should see only a limited release from its distributor, United Artists, but if there is enough word of mouth, we may see a wider expansion later. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
