My Architect: A Son’s Journey
Release Date:
November 12, 2003
Limited release
This documentary follows the life of Philadelphia architect Louis I Kahn, who was not a world-renowned architect but the documentarian’s father. Amongst the buildings Kahn designed are the Salk Institute and the Parliament and Capitol buildings in Dhaka, Bangladesh, yet he died alone, penniless and unidentified in a Penn Station bathroom in 1974. This documentary is an attempt by Kahn’s son, who was 11 when his father died, to understand his father’s life and work. Interviews with well-known architects, both contemporaries and successors to Kahn, as well as archival footage of Kahn himself are included in the film. In addition to focusing on the man’s work, there is an examination of his private life; Kahn had three separate families that he maintained during his lifetime, a wife and two lovers, and a child by each of the women with whom he was involved.
My Architect: A Son’s Journey is scheduled for a limited release beginning November 12, 2003. While documentaries occasionally break out of the art-house circuit and see greater success, it is exceedingly rare, and even more so when the story being told is one that is highly personal, as it is in this case. My Architect will likely spend a brief amount of time at the local art-house cinema before heading off to the home video market, where it will probably not see much activity beyond the niche market.
