Director Cheryl Dunye, who rose through the ranks as an experimental video maker and had a gritty prison feature called Stranger Inside that aired on HBO, takes on her first big budget feature film with this Miramax comedy. The film stars Eddie Griffin (Undercover Brother, Double Take), the criminally underrated Anthony Anderson (Two Can Play That Game, Barbershop) and Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) as three young men who have to care for their newborn children when all three of their girlfriends get pregnant at approximately the same time.
Griffin has a decent following; however, Undercover Brother was somewhat of a disappointment compared to expectations (and if you haven’t seen it, shame on you – it’s one of 2002’s best). Anderson is a terrific up-and-comer who definitely deserves notice. This particular premise is certainly unique for the target demographic, and should present every possibility for a solid breakout as far as box office. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
