Woody Allen stars in his latest comedy about an older artist who becomes romantically involved with a much younger woman.

Well, of course he does. It’s a Woody Allen film. What else would happen?

I’m thinking Allen needs a new shtick here. I mean, seriously, isn’t Woody getting rather too long in the tooth to be chasing after younger and younger actresses?

Well, be that as it may, there’s not a lot of info available on the Woodster’s new film, as is also customary, but with DreamWorks distributing the picture, we can certainly expect a relatively high-profile marketing campaign as the slated September release date draws nigh. And the partnership between DreamWorks and Allen seems to be a successful one; Allen’s films released by the studio seem to have garnered somewhat wider audience recognition than his previous works, and one would believe brought in a bit more at the box office, too. However, this hasn’t necessarily translated to box office longevity, although the films have found vibrant afterlife in the home video market. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)

We now know that our original information about a May/Passing-By-December-All-the-Way-Into-the-Following-March romance involving Woody Allen is not true (at least not in this movie). Instead, romance is between Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci, who recently appeared together in the movie version of the Elizabeth Wurtzel self absorbtion fest, Prozac Nation. ("Pro..wha?" Exactly.)

I've gotta say, while I've never been much of a fan of any of Jason Biggs's movies, he's a likeable actor and he seems to have a good sense of humor about his constant on screen humilitations (culinary or otherwise). Biggs plays Jerry, an aspiring writer in New York who falls in "love at first sight" (ACK!!) with Ricci's character, Amanda. Amanda is described in the official production notes as "free spirited" and "beautiful, but flighty." This is virtually always Hollywood code for one of two types: either "hippy dippy tree hugger who teaches the uptight Yuppie prick male lead about what's Really Important in Life" or "hot, but self absorbed bitch who torments the masochistically patient male lead for most of the movie before he eventually teaches her to Let Herself Be Loved." It appears that in this movie, it's the latter situation.

Rounding out the cast, Danny DeVito plays Jerry's loser manager who Jerry is too nice to put out to pasture. (Since Jerry is supposed to still be "aspiring" to be a writer, I'm praying that "manager" isn't code for "pimp".) In a nice change of pace from her role as the feisty, but dignified First Lady on The West Wing, Stockard Channing plays Amanda's selfish, rumpot diva mother who comes to live with Jerry and Amanda. Woody Allen plays Jerry's world wise older mentor, who presumably offers humorous, yet sage advice about the perils of living in the same house with your young girlfriend's mother. (Jennifer Turnock/BOP)
