Its spot in the Midnight Section at Sundance indicates that you should be ready for some campy fun. Three actresses at various stages of their careers share a house in Hollywood. You have the aging actress at the end of her career, the actress who just wants to have a baby (oh and she wants the doctor who performed her abortion years before to be the father), and the naïve innocent girl just off the bus from the Midwest. One more thing – all three of them are played by men.
The drag gimmick may get the film some attention, but as with any movie there is going to have to be more to satisfy audiences. The film has had success on the festival circuit, including a Best Actress award at the US Comedy Arts Festival. With evidence that the film is actually funny and perhaps with the success of Hairspray, which also features a drag performance, on Broadway perhaps Girls Will Be Girls can expand upon the gay audience that is sure to seek it out into the broader mainstream audience.
