Thirteen tells the tale of a young girl of the titular age. Befriended by the most popular girl in school, she finds her entrée into the in-crowd at her junior high leads her into a world of sex, drugs and petty crime and further and further away from her frantic mother.
The film is based in part on the life of its co-writer, Nikki Reed, and boasts the presence of Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter and Six Feet Under’s Jeremy Sisto in the cast. The film had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where director Catherine Hardwicke won the Director’s Award. The film is scheduled for a limited release in the US beginning August 20, 2003. The film has received generally positive reaction, but given the somewhat down subject matter, will likely not see a huge amount of success on the art-house circuit. There is a chance, however, that Thirteen will be remembered come Oscar time, and good critical reviews should help in that arena. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
