This movie marks the feature debut of British/Indian film director Asif Kapadia. He also co-wrote the screenplay with his senior tutor at the Royal College of Art in London, Tim Miller.

The film is set in ancient India during a time when warlords ruled the land. The main character, named Lafcadia (Irfan Khan), is the official executioner/enforcer for a brutal warlord who orders his warriors to kill anyone who doesn't pay his taxes. Lafcadia decides that this isn't the life he wants to lead and leaves the service of his master. The master isn't very pleased by this turn of events, so he kills Lafcadia's young son and sends people to hunt him down and bring back his head.

Lafcadia's journey takes him from the extremely high temperatures of the deserts of Rajasthan province to the cold at the Himalayan foothills. He is not only trying to escape his would-be assassins, but he is also trying to escape his past life and start over.

This film has been well received by both audiences and critics alike. It has won many awards, including Best Cinematography at the 2001 San Sebastian International Film Festival. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
