Ever wonder what it would be like to look into the mind of one of the greatest thinkers of our time? Wonder no more! This film takes a look at the life and thoughts of Jacques Derrida. Many of you may not have heard of Mr. Derrida unless you've taken philosophy classes. He is the father of the Deconstructionist school of thought. Basically, this philosophy breaks down (deconstructs) something into its most basic pieces and examines those parts as they relate to the whole. Directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering Kofman do a little bit of deconstruction themselves in this movie. They take a look at how the individual pieces of a documentary come together to make a complete motion picture. Mr. Derrida also helps them along the way by deconstructing his own life. The film takes a look at how Derrida's personal biases, cultural background, and subjectivities have led to his way of thinking; again, breaking down something into its essential parts. This movie has been making its way around the film-festival circuit since its world premiere at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. If you get a chance to see this film, it may bring life to those dry philosophy textbooks you've read. By seeing Derrida getting his hair cut and eating some yogurt, it may allow you to see those great thinkers as regular people as well. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
