The classic Grimm Brothers' fairy tale is brought to the silver screen once again. In this retelling, however, Hansel & Gretel are stranded in the forest by their evil stepmother while their father is on a business trip, and must turn to a vast assortment of magical friends to keep them safe and return them home to the loving arms of their father.

Although the eponymous leads are played by relative unknowns, the enchanted characters the pair encounter are brought to life by quite the stellar cast, including Bobcat Goldthwait, Tom Arnold, Sinbad and Lynn Redgrave as the wicked witch who lives in the enticing gingerbread house. Hansel & Gretel also marks the feature-film debut of its director, Gary J. Tunnicliffe, who also co-wrote the screenplay with neophyte scribes Jonathan Bogner and Timothy Dolan.

Hansel & Gretel is getting a limited release on October 18, 2002. Since this is a live-action fairytale that isn't brought to us by the good folks at Disney, I don't imagine it will stay in the theaters very long before making its way to video and DVD. So if you want to catch this one on the big screen, keep your eye on your local art-house schedule. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
