Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) was originally slated to direct this horror flick, but took on executive producer duties instead, as David Twohy (Pitch Black) is now at the helm. Aronofsky and Twohy co-wrote the screenplay with debut scribe Lucas Sussman. Much like Pitch Black, the cast of Below is made up primarily of less-recognized actors such as Bruce Greenwood (Thirteen Days), Scott Foley (Scream 3 and TV's Felicity) and Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense). Greenwood plays Lt. Brice, the second-in-command of a sub sent out to rescue three survivors from a British hospital ship, including a nurse (played by Williams). The ship has been sunk by Nazis, who also pursue the sub as its crew tries to outwit an enemy destroyer and deal with an ever-decreasing supply of oxygen. To make matters worse, it seems there is some sort of menacing presence down below them, slowly stalking. Twohy's Pitch Black has become somewhat of a cult favorite on video, but it is unlikely that the typical moviegoer will make the connection between that film and this new release. Still, if Below shows many of the same stylistically-appealing touches in the trailer, it may very well have similar box office prospects to its predecessor. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
