Sony Pictures Classics is bringing this Spanish film to the United States. The original title is Juana La Loca, which literally translates to Joan the Mad. Unless you're a student of European history, you've probably never heard of this monarch. She was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. You may remember them as the ones who paid for Christopher Columbus' trip to the New World in 1492.

Joan made quite a name for herself also. She married the Archduke of Austria, Philip the Handsome, for political reasons. Joan became Queen of Spain in 1504 after her mother and older brothers died. Soon the pressures of being queen and the discovery of her husband's infidelity drove her to madness. Philip had her declared insane and proclaimed himself king.

This film is from one of Spain's most important filmmakers, Vicente Aranda. The movie was Spain's entry for Best Foreign-Language Film at the 2002 Academy Awards. It won three awards at Spain's Goya Awards and was nominated for nine others. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
