In 1982, Steven Spielberg thrilled audiences with this heartwarming tale. The movie shot up the box office charts and is currently sitting at number seven in worldwide box office with $704.8 million and number four for in the United States with $399.8 million. Spielberg decided it was time to re-release the film to a new generation.

If you don't know the story, it's about an alien who comes to Earth and gets left behind. He befriends a boy named Elliot (Henry Thomas) who tries to help him get back home. It's a wonderful story for moviegoers of all ages.

Taking a page from the George Lucas handbook, Spielberg made some updates to the film using modern technology. A couple of new scenes have been added including an E.T./Elliot bathtub scene and one where the kids are looking for E.T. on Halloween. One controversial change that Spielberg made was to digitally remove the guns from the hands of FBI agents chasing Elliot and replace them with walkie-talkies. Spielberg says it was intention to never have guns in the original and technology has given him the chance to correct this.

On a DVD note, it's reported that Universal plans on releasing the original 1982 version along with the 20th anniversary edits. Think back to how much you loved this film when you were young and be sure to take your kids to experience this movie treat. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
