Kenneth Branagh sure is keeping himself busy these days. In addition to his many movie roles in the past few years, he has also appeared in or narrated several TV projects.
This role has Branagh playing A. O. Neville, an Australian bureaucrat who has some Aboriginal youths abducted from their homes to be trained as domestic help for a family. The three Aboriginal girls escape from their predicament and start a 1,500-mile journey home across the Australian Outback following a rabbit-proof fence, which was built to save Australia from a spreading rabbit plague.
The film is not only a strong political statement about the plight of the native people of Australia who have been downtrodden for so long, but it's also a look at the loss of innocence and the determination of the human will.
The film had its world premiere in Australia early in 2002, and was picked up for US distribution by Miramax at the Cannes Film Festival. If you get a chance, go see this film, and I'm sure you'll be inspired by the strength of the Aborigines. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
