Legendary French director Jean-Luc Godard brings us his latest work that will have viewers scratching their heads. But what else is new? As the founder of the French New Wave movement of films, Godard has always taken a bizarre look at the human experience.
The main "story" of this film-within-a-film takes a look at the four steps of love: meeting, physical passion, quarrels, and reconciliation. This is done by observing the lives and loves of three generations: young, adult, and elderly. But through this examination of love, we also see many swipes taken at modern life, especially the commercialization of Hollywood.
One of the many unusual aspects of this film is that the first hour is filmed in black-and-white and the last half-hour using a color digital camera. But if you've seen any of Godard's films, you know that this is the least of the weirdness you will experience. Reviews of this film have basically gone into two camps, either "This is another brilliant Godard work" or "What the heck was that?" If this comes to your local art house, go with an open mind and experience the movie. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
June 14, 2002 After being pushed to a June release date from its planned April 26th release, the Godard film is now scheduled for limited release in late August. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
