The Rising Place is a coming-of-age tale that details one young woman's journey toward self-awareness and tolerance amidst the turmoil of racial injustice and world war, and how the lessons of the past can influence future generations.
Virginia Wilder (Frances Fisher) goes to visit her Aunt Millie (Alice Drummond) one Christmas and finds Millie's collection of letters from her youth. The story shifts between past and present, as Virginia learns of her aunt's strong convictions and loyal friendships that went against the social norm of 1940s Mississippi.
As a young woman, Emily (Laurel Holloman) became pregnant out-of-wedlock. Determined to keep the child, she relied on the support of her two best friends, Wilma Watson (Elise Neal) and Will Bacon (Mark Webber), both African-Americans, and the unconditional love of her mother (Tess Harper) in order to take her stand and find her own way in the world. Shunned by her peers, the rest of the town, and even her own father (Gary Cole), Emily faces the challenges and prejudices of her time and gains strength and wisdom, as well as loyal and loving relationships that last throughout her life.
The Rising Place is receiving a limited release on November 8, 2002, and given its subject matter, should enjoy a moderately-successful run on the art-house circuit. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
