The life of a ballet dancer can be a tremendous strain, not only on a physical level, but emotionally as well. After seeing this film, you may never look at the ballet the same way again.

This documentary takes a behind-the-scenes look at the Paris Opera Ballet. Director and narrator Nils Tavernier has had a fascination with the ballet company ever since he visited his grandparents when he was younger. They just happened to live on the Avenue de l'Opera in Paris.

Louis XIV formed the ballet company in 1713. Since that time, many famous dancers have been part of their elaborate productions. In this film, we get to see performances from classic works such as Swan Lake and La Sylphide, as well as contemporary works such as Pierre Darde's Orison. In addition to these performances, there are interviews with dancers, opera house management, teachers, and young students. All of these people give a unique perspective into the world of ballet.

The documentary was released in France on March 14, 2001 to very positive reviews. It has finally received a US distributor and should be making its way to a local art house near you soon. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
