Ice Cube (Ghosts of Mars) and Mike Epps (How High), the duo that made Next Friday a sleeper smash, re-team in this buddy picture from New Line Cinema. The corny basis for their union is that Reggie Reed (Epps) has jumped bail and is pursued by Bucum (Cube), a bounty hunter. As they have a showdown in a deserted warehouse, they accidentally discover that a group of criminals is participating in a diamond heist at the same location. Hijinks ensue as the two men decide to put aside their differences and work together to stop the thieves from getting away with millions of dollars' worth of stolen diamonds. You might remember this film from last year, when it was called Double Take.

The good news is that Double Take was a very amusing film that had a stellar opening weekend and did decent business overall (per the table below). The better news is that Ice Cube is a better box-office draw than anyone in that film, so the box-office upside here is solid. In addition, Ice Cube has demonstrated a tremendous onscreen presence and charisma that indicates he's capable of even bigger things, given the right scripts (see: Three Kings). While on paper this film doesn't sound like it's going to be a tremendous stretch for him, it's exactly the sort of comedy/action role that will appeal to his core fans, and the scheduled release date isn't a coincidence, either. That's the same time-frame when Next Friday launched into theaters with astonishing success (nearly $17 million and a per-screen average of over $15,000). The launch of Ghosts of Mars will be a solid indication of how much drawing power he has as an action star, but if this film has solid trailers, it should see similar success to Next Friday.
