A film that will surely gain a lot of attention due to the tragedies of September 11th is Kandahar, by acclaimed Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Makhmalbaf, the director of such acclaimed films as Gabbeh and The Silence, debuted this film at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival where it was the Ecumenical Jury Award winner.

The story is described as fictional tales of a woman, Nafas, whose family had escaped war-torn Afghanistan and headed to Canada only to mistakenly leave her sister behind. Years after their escape, Nafas heads back to Afghanistan after she receives a letter from her sister informing her that she is about to commit suicide. Currently working as a reporter, Nafas is all too aware of what has been happening in Afghanistan under the now infamous Taliban regime. Nafas returns to the devastated country and smuggles herself in by way of a caravan heading back to Afghanistan.

Kandahar sees a limited release in mid-December just in time to be considered for the Academy Awards. Its best chance will be a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and chances are that it will get a lot of attention due to its subject matter. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
