Try as you might to deny it, everyone enjoys a good chick fight. I don’t care if it's two hotties (Kill Bill), two notties (Monster-In-Law) or three dummies (Charlie’s Angels), one good chick fight can be worth the price of admission. It’s like one of Newton’s laws or something.

So given this, what would make an especially good chick fight even better? I know! Make an entire movie that’s basically one big chick fight, but put the two women in the most beautiful outfits possible so that the fight is both arresting and hilarious. But when do women look their most beautiful? I know! Make the chick fight all about a wedding. Or even better, two weddings!

And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Coming straight to theaters from New Regency Productions, you have Bride Wars, a seemingly brainless comedy about two best friends who inexplicably become rivals when they both schedule their wedding on the same day. Why one of them couldn’t just change their wedding date and try to get a 2-for-1 special on a caterer or floral designer, I don’t know, but I’m sure that a luscious and comedic chick fight emerges from this matrimonial mess.

Bride Wars comes to us from the executive producer of Uptown Girls and the writer of Saving Silverman with a re-touch by the 10 Things I Hate About You scribe. So, I think you can safely assume that the executives behind the camera know how to tell a good female-oriented comedy. On opposite sides of the chick fight are Kate Hudson (still trying to find a worthy follow-up to her Oscar-nominated turn in Almost Famous) and Anne Hathaway (who seems to excel at playing dopey-yet-lovable characters, in my opinion). Rounding out the cast is Murphy Brown herself, Candice Bergen, who is more able, I think, than any other actress in Hollywood at playing a hard-boiled, hard-ass woman.

Since it seems to me, this movie has little cinematically to aspire to, there really isn’t that much to criticize it for. Say the title, Bride Wars, and you pretty much know what you’re going to get. I’ll say this, though: the chick fight better be good. (Jason Lee/BOP)
