Happenstance is a French-language film with English subtitles. The French title of the movie is Le Battement d'ailes du papillon, which translates as "The Beating of Butterfly Wings." That title perfectly sets the premise of the story, which is that just as the fluttering of butterfly wings over the Atlantic Ocean can launch a typhoon in the Pacific, so can every human action, no matter how seemingly small or insignificant, lead to bigger events.
The movie itself focuses on a number of unrelated characters and shows how their actions cause tremendous change in one another's lives. Featuring Audrey Tatou, the star of the buzz-gathering Amélie, Happenstance has thus far been highly praised critically.
The film is being distributed in the U.S. by Lot 47 and looks to be released on a very limited number of screens, though if Amélie is successful, it may expand further. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
