A year ago, America Ferrara was an unknown commodity. She had starred in a well-received little indie flick called Real Women Have Curves, and had a role in the ensemble flick The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Today, though, she's the Golden Globe-winning star of the breakthrough comedy Ugly Betty, which means that she has some name recognition and a decent fanbase. She'll almost certainly be billed as the key reason to see Under the Same Moon, a movie that deals with the frequently-debated issue of illegal immigration.

Under the Same Moon follows the parallel stories of a nine-year-old boy named Carlitos and his mother Rosario. Rosario wants nothing more than to provide the best life possible for her son. To that end, she is working illegally in the United States while her mother cares for Carlitos in Mexico. Some unexpected circumstances arise that cause both Rosario and Carlitos to try to reunite with the other, with each one traveling their own path. Naturally, they face plenty of adversity along the way, but never lose sight of the end goal - being together again.

With a limited release, Under the Same Moon is likely to have primarily art house appeal. There is definitely a market for movies targeted at Latin American audiences, though, which will increase the likelihood for success. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
