In 1988, director Giuseppe Tornatore brought us a wonderful film about how a love of movies and movie-making can affect someone's life.

Here's a synopsis, in case you haven't seen the film. The story revolves around a famous film director, Salvatore, who returns home to the Sicilian village where he grew up for the first time in 30 years. He reminisces about how his love of movies started. He remembers the Cinema Paradiso, where he would sit endlessly and watch movies. He befriends the projectionist, who teaches him about movie-making. He also remembers his long-lost teenage love, Elena, whom he had to leave behind.

This director's cut includes 48 minutes of film that were edited from the original theatrical release. Most of the restored footage centers around Salvatore and Elena meeting in a store as adults.

This film has won numerous awards, including the Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, and the Grand Prize of the Jury at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. At 170 minutes, the film still isn't that long to watch. Do yourself a favor and check out this marvelous movie. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
