This film is based on the play of the same name by Oscar Wilde and marks the second time that director/screenwriter Oliver Parker has adapted an Oscar Wilde play, with the other being An Ideal Husband in 1999.

You may have read or seen this play before. But for those of you who haven't, here's a rundown of the story. Our two main characters, Jack Worthing (Colin Firth) and Algernon Moncrieff (Rupert Everett), live in London in the 1890s. Jack is in love with his friend Algernon's cousin, and he makes up a story about having to visit his brother "Earnest" so he can go visit her. Algernon unknowingly uses the same pseudonym when he goes to see Jack. Of course, there is a comedy of errors with the two guys using the same name.
